Edo okays 27.5% for teachers

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Wednesday, approved the implementation of the 27.5 per cent Teachers Special Allowance for secondary school teachers in the State.
The development, according to government statement, however did not cover striking primary school teachers, with the governor threatening to invoke the no-work-no-pay rule against them.
Speaking after a meeting with executive members of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, the governor criticised members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers for embarking on what he described as illegal strike.
He said, “I appreciate that you have done this in the face of being blackmailed or misunderstood. You recognise that all of us in Edo are stakeholders with shared responsibility to ensure that the younger ones have access to quality education.”
Explaining what he called national financial challenges, the governor said no government in the federation had been getting what was due to it.
“On that basis, irrespective of the financial challenges that we are in, we have looked at it and we have resolved as government to revisit the issue of the allowance. We know we are already paying 17 per cent leaving a balance of 10 per cent. We will commence implementation of the full 27.5 per cent from the July 1, 2013.”
